This week – 25 September 1289

Earl Duncan III of Fife was murdered at Pitpollok near Brechin by Sir Patrick Abernethy and Sir Walter Percy. He was buried at Coupar Angus Abbey. His marriage to Joan, daughter of Gilbert de Clare, earl of Gloucester, produced one son, Duncan, born posthumously in 1289 or 1290. Earl Duncan had been one of the guardians chosen in April 1286 and also served as sheriff of Dumbarton in 1288.
