This week – 11 March 1302

On 11 March, 1302 from the grange of Maybole, Robert de Brus, earl of Carrick, the future king, issued a statement that the abbot and convent of Melrose are exempt from providing forinsec service since they should be, through charters and muniments of his progenitors relating to the grange of Maybole and the land of Largs in his earldom of Carrick (AYR), freely infefted. Robert had recently ‘acted against the freedoms granted to them’ by burdening them for his military service of Carrick, for which burdens Robert now granted that no service woudl be taken from the men of the monks.
